Effective Healthy People 2020 Resources to Influence a Health in All Policies Approach to Policy and Program Development

Wednesday, November 4, 2015 : 8:30 a.m. - 8:50 a.m.

Theresa Devine, MPH, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, US Department of Health and Human Services, Rockville, MD
Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) is the longest running Federal disease prevention and health promotion plan in the United States and establishes science-based measurable objectives with targets to be achieved over a ten-year period.  HP2020 is the embodiment of a health in all policies (HiAP) approach, where stakeholders from across diverse sectors (e.g., Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Housing, Department of Education, Department of Justice) come together to assess complex factors that influence health and equity and to develop national health objectives to improve these multifaceted health issues.

This presentation will describe how HP2020 can be used as a model for state and local communities to develop their own HiAP program. Attendees will learn about various HP2020 tools that can be used to develop, implement, and evaluate a health in all policies program, including using our MAP-IT program planning and evaluation tool, exploring our 26 leading health indicators to set priorities for the program, using the HP2020 data search to assess national baselines and targets for various health issues, and searching for evidence-based resources to positively impact a health issue in the community. Lastly, attendees will learn about our newest resource showcasing HP2020 as a critical model of a HiAP program, the Healthy People 2020 Law and Health Policy project, which demonstrates the impact and effect that laws and policies can have in improving health. Attendees will learn how to apply these various HP2020 resources to develop and implement a similar health in all policies program.
