Healthy People 2020: Laying the foundation for addressing social determinants of health and health equity

Now in its fourth decade, the Healthy People initiative for the first time includes a specific overarching goal to create social and physical environments that promote good health for all, a dedicated Topic Area that defines the social determinants of health approach and establishes national objectives, and a Leading Health Indicator for social determinants.   Healthy People 2020 has placed an intentional, elevated focus on social determinants by emphasizing the need to move beyond controlling disease to address root causes of disease. This presentation will describe the key elements of Healthy People 2020’s social determinants approach that provide a solid foundation on which to structure policies and programs at various levels across multiple sectors aimed at improving health and quality of life for all populations.
