Healthy People 2020: Integrating health equity and social determinant goals into health policy and practice

Each decade, the Healthy People initiative establishes the nation prevention agenda and provides the foundation of disease prevention and health promotion policies and programs. Healthy People 2020 has placed a renewed emphasis on addressing the social and environmental factors that influence the health and quality of life of all Americans. This social determinants of health approach aims to achieve equity and eliminate disparities across all population groups. Presenters will discuss national and community efforts and the use of Healthy People objectives and data to drive progress toward a health equitable nation. This session will increase public health practitioners’ knowledge of the following competency areas: Public health or related public policy.
Session Objectives: Discuss approaches to integrating the Healthy People 2020 social determinants of health framework into health improvement plans, policies and programs. Identify specific examples of activities at the national, state or local levels that support the achievement the national objectives and targets Articulate how the activities address the social determinants of health.
