In online education for a global health community, effective communication (face-to-face communication and other types of interactions) is more dependent upon enabled technology.

When we communicate using technology there is a better chance of the communication to be less effective or “lost in translation”.  This phenomenon can have a powerful negative effect in online education and is linked to poor results in student retention.

It is important, therefore to carefully select and vary communication opportunities and methods in online education.

Effective cross-cultural communication is strategically important to online programs. This type of communication involves an understanding of how people from different cultures speak, communicate and perceive the world around them. Language differences, nonverbal differences and power distance are major factors that can affect cross-cultural communication.

In this session, we will explore various types of communication  (face to face, computer mediated, synchronized  vs. asynchronized  and written) and the technology that allows the communication to take place.  We will also explore specific design strategies that will promote effective communication and enhance learning.

We will also list  a minimum of 3 tools and resources that will promote effective communication and collaboration in an eLearning environment. Including but not limited to:

  • Voice and Video enabled discussions
