Monday, November 2, 2015 : 3:30 p.m. - 3:50 p.m.

Bryna Helfer, PhD, U.S. Department of Transportation, Washington, DC

Transportation systems are an important consideration in how communities can support well-being and health. They provide people with reliable and affordable connections to employment, education, health care, and a variety of services and other opportunities, and also allow people and communities to maintain social connectivity with others. The design of transportation infrastructure can also increase safety and facilitate the adoption of healthier behaviors that promote health. Transportation systems also contribute significantly to the economic competitiveness of communities and regions through increased accessibility and reduced transportation costs. The purpose of this presentation is to highlight ongoing efforts by the US Department of Transportation to promote well-being and health as well as equity in access through several initiatives such as “Ladders of Opportunity.”
