Eliminating Health Disparities: Using Personal Empowerment to Create Safe Places For Intimacy After Illness

By combining qualatative research methods and the techniques of Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed, we have created a workshop designed to help people listen to their bodies in order to heal. The goals for the workshop overall are: (a) to help people see how they define beauty, (b) to see that the conecpt of beauty is subjective, and (c) that the world at large is not concered with physical beauty as much as it is concerned with essence. The three goals are tied to the larger theme of heightening tenderness with self and creating awareness of the differences in perception. An excerise supporting each of the goals will be presented. While reaching a state of radical body acceptance is desired, we understand that simply the process can be very healing. Through interaction with participents, we hope to show the tremendous power of images to tell astory and the ability of radical body self acceptance to help in healing
