The Substance Abuse Treatment Study (SATS), a developmental analysis of the content, process and context of group treatment, was designed to examine the nation's alcohol and drug treatment system and to serve as a venue for developing and testing methodologies that could be used in future studies of treatment content and process. Many studies have produced substantive information about the general characteristics of treatment programs and facilities. While their focus has historically been on the content, structure, and management of treatment services, the treatment process itself has seldom been examined within these investigations. In addition, the emphasis has been on individual therapy. No comprehensive description of the process and content of group substance abuse treatment exists. A major objective of SATS was to fill gaps in the literature and contribute incremental knowledge about an important but underdeveloped area of treatment research, the group process. Specifically SATS researchers sought to collect comprehensive, descriptive data about treatment practices from a representative sample of substance abuse treatment facilities and to conduct selected substudies to refine the research methodology. Nineteen facilities participated. Data presented are drawn from a sample of 17 facility directors, 94 treatment staff, 74 group leaders and 566 clients and represent descriptions and characteristics from each domain and their impact on treatment services. The effect of observation on the group process and the most efficacious way to observe groups was examined. The results generated by SATS offer unique insight into the process of outpatient group treatment | ||||
