"Turning Point- 2002" to "Collaborative Leadership- An essential Component of Public Health."
Turning Point’s Leadership Development National Excellence Collaborative, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in 2000, is a multi-state collaborative whose mission is to "increase collaborative leadership capacity across sectors and at all levels." A four-year funded project, the collaborative, comprised of representatives from seven Turning Point states and national partners has conducted extensive research on the effect of collaborative leadership on community health improvement, how collaborative leaders in public health and other sectors learn collaborative leadership skills. Experts in leadership development such as Carl Larson, Arthur Himmelman, Marshall Kreuter, Reola Phelps, Robert Goodman, and Gary Gunderson have responded to questions such as What is Collaborative Leadership? What skills and competencies are needed to be a collaborative leader? How can Collaborative Leadership be used to mobilize communities? How does Collaborative Leadership link to the competencies for the 10 Essential Services? The Leadership Development Collaborative is in the process of creating tools and models of Collaborative Leadership that can be used by leadership development training programs like the Public Health Leadership Institutes and within state and local health departments.
Learning Objectives: ß Define Collaborative Leadership and identify the skills and competencies associated with it. ß Develop an understanding of how Collaborative Leadership makes a difference in mobilizing communities. ß Articulate benefits for implementing Collaborative Leadership Practices, specifically related to health status improvement. ß List methods, tools, and practices used for successful collaboration.
