Obesity is showing itself to be a global burden, contributing to the growing morbidity rates of countries in the developed and developing world alike (World Health Organization, Global Strategy of Diet and Physical Activity: http://www.who.int/dietphysicalactivity/en/). It is becoming increasingly important for health systems to address obesity as the related diseases that accompany it – diabetes, heart disease, cancer – are becoming an added strain on many already burdened systems. This session will focus on obesity and its related diseases. Two presenters will address controlling the prevalence of obesity in specific populations, while two presenters will focus directly on diabetes as a condition resulting from obesity, and how to prevent it using informal and formal education methods.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able (1) describe major intervention activities for obesity control; (2) discuss the effectiveness of an obesity control program; (3) describe the impact of a diabetes education program using both formal and informal methods; (4) discuss possible strategies for improving diabetes educations programs and (5) describe diabetes risk factors in specific populations.
