3433.0 Invited Session: The National Health Interview Survey: 50 Years of Progress

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), which is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) in 2007; the NHIS has been fielded continuously since 1957. This session was organized to 1) give attendees a better sense of the broad range of usefulness of the NHIS data; 2) provide specific information about several of the NHIS data systems; 3) heighten awareness of how to carry out longitudinal analyses using NHIS datasets.
Session Objectives: 1) identify one of the major data systems of NCHS and describe data collection methods and survey content; 2) describe examples of analytic uses of the data for cancer control; 3) identify how the NHIS health insurance coverage data can be used for policy initiatives: 4) Understand the issues in developing the Integrated Health Interview Series and how it can be used to examine the health of the United States from 1969-2005.
