182375 Evaluation of a corner store renovation and its ability to improve access to healthy foodMonday, October 27, 2008
Presentation Preferred: Poster
ABSTRACT Background: Romano's Grocery, a corner store in North Philadelphia is part of an initiative that expands economic opportunity for owners of corner stores by increasing the capacity of store owners to stock and merchandize healthy products (including fresh produce). This study aims to evaluate the impact a corner store renovation has on the food landscape of a community with limited healthy food access. Objectives: 1.Evaluate customer receptivity to fresh foods at Romano's 2.Compare and contrast Romano's product availability with other local stores 3.Evaluate changes in customer purchasing patterns within the community Methods: A pilot study conducted 5 months after renovation will utilize Romano's customer surveys, in depth interviews with Romano's staff, local store surveys of product availability, and a focus group to assess opinions of the new store, receptivity to healthy food items, and subsequent shopping patterns of local residents. Changes in store sales pre- and post-renovation will also be evaluated. Expected Results: Post-renovation increases in shopping frequency, sales, and the purchase of fruits and vegetables among Romano's shoppers; higher proportion of Romano's foods have a better price and quality compared to other stores Discussion: Many urban residents, unable to access local supermarkets, are dependent on corner stores for their everyday food needs. Introducing healthy foods into stores that do not typically provide them may ultimately improve health outcomes within underserved populations. Additionally, the creation of a mutually beneficial store environment for owners, customers, and neighborhoods encourages a more sustainable healthy food system within the community.
