4208.0 Iran and the Future of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime

Tuesday, October 28, 2008: 12:30 PM
Oral
A public health catastrophe is embedded in U.S. and Israeli military threats against Iran. In 2007, APHA adopted a policy that calls on the US government to take the following actions: 1. Clearly state that it will not launch a preemptive military attack on Iranian facilities and explicitly rule out any possible use of nuclear weapons against Iran. 2. Vigorously pursue United Nations–authorized diplomatic initiatives to guarantee Iranian compliance with its Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty obligations not to develop nuclear weapons, while halting current US plans to develop and deploy nuclear weapons. and 3. Explicitly reaffirm its historical commitment to international treaties aimed at curbing the development and proliferation of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction. This session will address the public health consequences of a war in Iran, and steps that will be needed to foster a peaceful resolution of the conflict, including the critical need for the U.S. to uphold its legal obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty .
Session Objectives: At the end of this session participants will: Describe the estimated public health impacts of a war in Iran; Articulate APHA's policy "Opposition to US Attack on Iran" adopted in 2007; and Identify peaceful pathways to resolving the conflict.
