Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview: In the 2008 Learning Institute, the Quad Council of Public Health Nursing Organizations (Quad Council) will provide its annual overview of the state of public health nursing. The purpose of this session is discuss enhancing public health nursing capacity through partnerships. In particular, research regarding a proposed public health nurse to population ratio will be discussed. An overview of the session will be provided by the Chair of the Quad Council. A presentation by the project director of the Association of State and Territorial Directors of Nursing, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Partners' Cooperative Agreement regarding will follow focus on partnership and the public health nurse to population ratio. A panel of Quad Council Organization leaders will provide perspective, implications, and priorities for action for PHN education, practice, research, and policy. Participants will be invited to comment on the presentation and the panel's perspectives, as well as to raise issues and questions for the Quad Council to consider over the course of the next year.
Session Objectives: Upon completion of the session, the participants will 1. Discuss examples of partnership between public health nursing practice and education. 2. Identify uses of public health nurse to population ratio. 3. Discuss perspectives of Quad Council of Public Health Nursing Organizations regarding partnerships and the public health nurse to population ratio.
