4357.0 Intervention Research on Reducing Health Disparities among African Americans and Hispanic Americans

A panel of investigators from Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Hispanic Serving Institutions will present findings from five community-based intervention research studies conducted with the aim of reducing health disparities. The first study focused on determining the impact of a telephonic patient navigator intervention on the self-management behaviors of African American adults with type 2 diabetes. A second study identifies strategies for increasing access and utilization of interconception care by pregnant Latina women. The third study provides information about factors that contribute to increased involvement of Latinos in HIV prevention behaviors. The fourth study will provide findings from a study to increase diabetes self-management among African Americans. The fifth study offers information about strategies to increase prostate cancer screening among African American men.
Session Objectives: Discuss the impact of a telephonic patient navigator intervention on the self-management behaviors of African American adults with type 2 diabetes. Describe the outcomes of an HIV intervention program involving promotores to increase involvement of Spanish speaking Latinos in HIV prevention behaviors. Discuss the effectiveness of a diabetes self-management program with African Americans. Describe the outcomes of a study to increase prostate cancer screening among African American men.
