3107.1 Safe Use of Medications as a Public Health Concern

In the world of clinical care, medications have both improved the quality of life and saved lives. However, there are significant tradeoffs to their therapeutic use, abuse and safety. This session will explore the state of public health approaches to addressing the appropriate use, abuse and safety of prescription and nonprescription medications.
Session Objectives: Define the essential public health role the FDA plays in ensuring the safe use of medications. Describe the role of the National Drug Control Office (ONDCP) in reducing the inappropriate use of medications. Discuss the emerging issues concerning safe and appropriate medication use by adolescents and seniors.
