This interesting session will include discussions about a variety of topics relating to the epidemiology of adolescent health. The topics include violence in New Orleans before and after Hurricane Katrina, cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, prescription and over the counter drug misuse. An additional presentation will focus on the newly emerging issues of hyper-texting and hyper-networking.
Session Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the learner (participant) will be able to:
1) Describe trends in self-reported violence perpetration acts among school-attending adolescents in New Orleans before and after Hurricane Katrina;
2) Analyze ways in which prescription and over-the-counter drug misuse differs by client characteristics as a way to inform and tailor prevention efforts, especially among youth populations; and
3) List health risk behaviors, health attitudes, and mental and physical health outcomes associated with hyper-texting and hyper-networking.
