3382.0 The APHA History Update Project: Members, Section, SPIG, Caucus, and Affiliate’s Role and Participation in Telling our Story

The session addresses the APHA History update project. The last update of the APHA History was the 100 Year History written by Nancy Bernstein at the century anniversary of APHA in 1972. Much of has occurred in public health in the intervening 37 years. It is important to preserve and transmit APHA’s role as the premier Public Health Association in a time of continued flux and challenge to both the nation’s health, as well as the global reach of the action and mission of the Association. The session is structured to present the core aims and procedures in updating the Associations history. Sections, SPIGS, Caucus, Affiliates, and leadership will be asked to attend to provide a continuing link and liaison to gathering and constructing the update. The session establishes: • the enduring value of APHA and the need to capture our past and current events. • The variety of sources and materials available, and how the steps proposed to gather and collate and disseminate the updated history project • How members can become engaged and contribute to the project • The collateral uses of the project in teaching, educating, and advocating on behalf of the Association’s mission and membership A panel of discussants will present the project and significance, audience discussion will follow.
Session Objectives: Inform the Association and members of the APHA History Update Project. Enlist support and participation of both membership units , individuals and those who can contribute to the Project. Set forth the specific steps and uses of the project to maximize the efficiency completeness and participation of the project. Set up a continuing exchange going forward with Sections, SPIGS, Caucus, Affiliates, and leadership. Establish the liaison network through explicit signups subsequent collection of background documents and media input for the History Update.
