4252.0 Developing and Communicating the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans provide evidence-based nutrition guidance for Americans ages 2 and older to promote health and well-being and help prevent diet-related illnesses. The Guidelines are the basis for Federal nutrition policy, programs and education. They are also the basis for setting national health objectives in the area of nutrition. Reviewed and revised every five years, the latest iteration of the Guidelines will be relased in late 2010. This session will focus on the development of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines, as well as plans for communicating the messages of the Guidelines. Speakers will explain the scientific foundation of the Guidelines, discuss the Federal policy development process, and share formative research findings being used to inform communications strategies. A timeline for release of the 2010 Guidelines and associated communications products will be presented.
Session Objectives: 1) Describe the 2010 Dietary Guidelines development process, including the evidence-based review of literature and the formulation of Federal policy 2) Identify key communications research findings to be used in the development of Dietary Guidelines consumer materials
