This session covers topics related to maternal and infant health. Included are presentations on breastfeeding initiation and duration; state’s progress toward meeting infant health Healthy People 2010 objectives; and a tool for working with communities to address feto-infant mortality. Methods described include use of PRAMS, Baysean analytical methods, Perinatal Period of Risk. Lastly this session presents the experiences of a preconception training program based on epidemiologic data.
Session Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to: 1. Describe risk factors associated with breastfeeding initiation and duration and identify target populations for breastfeeding promotion in Mississippi 2. Identify progress among states and counties toward meeting Healthy People 2010 objectives for low birth weight, preterm birth, infant mortality, and the elimination of disparities in these areas. 3. Recognize the value of using a Perinatal Periods of Risk approach for addressing limitations in using traditional infant mortality measures for program and policy planning efforts and working with communities to address feto-infant mortality through targeted interventions. 4. Describe a preconception training program based on epidemiologic data "Working to Help Educate and Empower healthy Life Styles"
