3237.0 Communicating and Applying the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans: Resources for Public Health Practice

Monday, October 31, 2011: 12:30 PM
Oral
The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans provide evidenced-based nutrition guidance for developing educational materials, nutrition policy and programs. A panel of federal employees will discuss new Federal nutrition education resources and worksite nutrition standards and sustainability guidelines that are based on the Dietary Guidelines. Representatives from the U.S. Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (DHHS) will describe comprehensive health communication and marketing campaigns underway to disseminate plain language actionable dietary guidance messages, tools, and information materials to consumers. The panel will also discuss innovative consumer research that informed the DHHS and USDA health communications and nutrition education campaigns and showcase examples of nutrition education resources that are available to community partners. Finally the panel will discuss a Dietary Guidelines-informed policy initiative, the Health and Sustainability Guidelines for Federal Concessions and Vending Operations. This initiative is a collaborative effort undertaken by DHHS and the General Services Administration (GSA), that will align the food served at DHHS and GSA facilities with the Dietary Guidelines, and increase the sustainability of DHHS and GSA food service operations overall. The Health and Sustainability Guidelines may provide a useful model for other Federal, non-Federal, business, and community organizations to improve the nutritional quality and sustainability of their worksite food service operations. While the overall goal of the session is to provide examples of how the Federal Government incorporates the Dietary Guidelines when developing education materials and policy, the session will also provide a unique opportunity for Federal and non-Federal partners to engage in a dialogue leading to strategies and potential collaborations to improve the health and nutritional status of the U.S. population.
Session Objectives: 1. Discuss innovative approaches developed by Federal agencies that have been tasked with implementing and disseminating the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2. Explain the process and framework that will be used for ongoing program evaluation and reporting activities undertaken to achieve measurable outcomes for Federal dietary guidance communication and education initiatives 3. Describe the science and partnerships behind the newly launched HHS/GSA Health and Sustainability Guidelines for Federal Concessions and Vending Operations
