In tough economic times, effective advocacy aimed at elected Federal, state, and local politicians can make the difference in getting a program funded. This session will focus on current and future public health and maternal and child health (MCH) opportunities for advocacy – including the Affordable Care Act – and how to effectively advocate to elected officials. The session will provide examples of using data effectively, engaging coalitions, setting political strategies, APHA advocacy priorities, and MCH advocacy opportunities.
Session Objectives: Identify current advocacy opportunities in maternal and child health and other public health priorities Discuss how to develop advocacy campaigns around specific public health issues Describe how to engage coalitions and grassroots to build support Identify how to set political strategies to achieve policy goals. Explain how to effectively advocate to elected public officials
