3265.0 Advancing Public Health Nursing Practice: Achieving Competency & Certifcation

In 2010, the Quad Council of Public Health Nursing Organizations (Quad Council) undertook the revision of the “Core Competencies for Public Health Nursing” (CCPHN), in part due to the revision of “Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals” by the Council on Linkages between Academia and Public Health Practice (CoL). Subsequently, the Quad Council adopted the CoL structure for revising and articulating these competencies comprised of eight domains and spanned by three tiers of practice. This session will present and review the revised CCPHN by the Quad Council completed in 2012. The session will address implications for public health and PHN practice, applicability for advanced practice public health nursing certification, and discuss how these competencies may prepare PHNs for leadership in public health accreditation. The discussants will address the following topics: 1. Dr. Susan Swider will describe the revised 2012 Core Competencies for Public Health Nursing (CCPHN), and compare them to the 2003 iteration of the CCPHN. 2. Dr. Joyce Krothe will identify the implications of the revised CCPHN for education, leadership, practice, and research, and their application to public health practice. 3. Michelle Cravetz will discuss how the CCPHN may be applied toward achieving advanced public health nursing certification; she will also describe how the competencies relate to public health accreditation.
Session Objectives: 1. Describe the three tiers of revised Core Competencies for Public Health Nursing. 2. Compare the 2012 Core Competencies for Public Health Nursing with the 2003 PHN competencies. 3. Identify implications of the revised Core Competencies for Public Health Nursing for education, leadership, practice, and research. 4. Discuss the Core Competencies for Public Health Nursing to public health practice. 5. Discuss how the Core Competencies for Public Health Nursing contribute toward achieving advanced public health nursing certification. 6. Explain the Core Competencies for Public Health Nursing in Tiers 2 & 3 to public health accreditation.
