The National Association of County and City Health Officials, supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, conducted an environmental scan of public and private sector efforts to promote and track influenza vaccination for children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN). Such children have been shown to be at significantly greater risk of severe outcomes of influenza illness. Information will be presented based on this scan and local health department (LHD) key informant interviews to determine current strategies, gaps, and challenges to promoting and collecting vaccination information for CSHCN. Based on the research, NACCHO will present the recommendations on how to promote influenza vaccinations for CSHCN and how to establish a mechanism to track the influenza vaccination rates for this population. The ultimate goal of this research is to improve the health protection of CSHCNs by increasing and improving LHD access to and use of resources that promote, facilitate, and measure seasonal influenza vaccinations for these populations.
