HHS has proposed a recommendation that updates and replaces earlier guidance for the optimal concentration of fluoride in drinking water for prevention of dental caries.  The updated recommendation sets the concentration of fluoride at 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water. The earlier guidance recommended a range of 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams. This update is in response to the availability of other sources of fluoride and increases in the prevalence of dental fluorosis.  Recent reviews of evidence by panels of experts have concluded that water fluoridation remains a safe and effective public health intervention for prevention of dental caries.
