Pamela Cipriano, PhD, RN , Executive Office, President, American Nurses Association, Silver Spring, MD
Nurses as front line caregivers are often the guardians and detectors of public health threats. When two registered nurses became infected with EBV while caring for an infected patient from Liberia, the US was galvanized to revisit authoritative guidelines for worker protection, system preparedness, education and communication with the public. The American Nurses Association (ANA) plays a key role in educating healthcare providers as well as the public, and advising government agencies on the evidence based interventions needed to keep patients and workers safe in the face of a public health threat. Retrospective and prospective approaches for responding to issues that compromise pubic trust and require unified action across the healthcare community will be discussed.

Learning Areas:

Ethics, professional and legal requirements
Planning of health education strategies, interventions, and programs
Public health or related organizational policy, standards, or other guidelines

Learning Objectives:
Describe the events that led to widespread fear and resulting actions across the US that clouded scientific based decisions to address the public health issues of EBV. Discuss Nursing’s response to issues faced in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, federal and state agencies’ decisions, and the interprofessional actions to address these concerns.
