We are constantly bombarded by visual communications but do we really understand how these images are impacting what we value and how we think and act? The rapid proliferation of electronic devices and their widespread ownership and use have given us all unprecedented access to, and consumption of, images and information---and its impact has cause for concern, especially among youth. In this session we will focus on digital media and feature examples of how it impacts our values and behaviors. Come learn about the history of images and how they are shaping our youth and culture. Learn what you can do as a professional to help advise and guide youth to minimize and manage risk. Extended clips from 3 outstanding documentaries will be viewed and presented by their directors and others intimately involved in the making of the film. In addition, practical tools to teach digital media literacy to youth will be presented. NEW documentaries will be featured: Beware of Images, The Mask You Live In and Hot Girls Wanted along with short educational videos directed at youth. Screening will be followed by facilitated discussion with expert panel and finish with audience Q&A as time permits.
Session Objectives: Describe how digital media influences attitudes and normalizes risk behaviors, especially for youth. Assess how various visual images are used to grab the attention of viewers and prompt them to act. Discuss with filmmakers the technical and practical aspects of filmmaking. Discuss impact of hardcore pornography on youth's sexuality. Identify tools and strategies that enhance digital media literacy in youth. Discuss how public health professionals can utilize digital media/images to promote health.
