The session will review some key advances made in responding effectively to the resurgent tuberculosis epidemic. Ms. Diana Weil, WHO/World Bank, will present on the objectives and progress of the Stop TB Initiative, a partnership to confront the TB epidemic (or Dr. A. Kochi, Director, Stop TB Initiative will present); Drs. Solange Cavalcante and Paula Fujiwara will present "a tale of two cities" on how the recommended DOTS strategy is/was launched in these complex settings of Rio de Janeiro and New York City. Drs. Cavalcante and Fujiwara are Directors of TB Control for their respective cities. Dr. Richard Laing (BU School of Public Health) will present on trends in pricing of anti-TB drugs, essential for DOTS success. Dr. Jim Kim (Harvard School of Medicine) will present on the challenge and response to rising mulit-drug resistant disease, including launching of the "DOTS-Plus" approach | ||||
