The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) is the largest collection of all-payer data in the country available for release to researchers. A recent major redesign has been underway to increase researchers' access to a wider array of administrative data collected through a partnership between the federal government, states, and industry. HCUP is a family of databases and tools maintained by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), formerly AHCPR. As of the 1997 data year, 22 state-level data organizations contribute data on hospitalizations and a growing number of states provide data on ambulatory surgeries and emergency department visits. All data are converted into a uniform format which allows multi-state analyses focusing on conditions, procedures, institutions, small areas, states, or the nation. Recent innovations in dissemination make these data even more accessible to researchers than before. A new distribution mechanism means that researchers can easily purchase uniform data for multiple states. A web-based query tool puts descriptive statistics for the nation and states at users' fingertips. HCUP also provides free downloadable software such as performance measures based on hospital data (HCUP Quality Indicators) and clinical groupers (Clinical Classification Software). Examples of research studies based on HCUP data and tools will be used to illustrate applications. Participants in this session will receive detailed packets of information about HCUP products along with instructions on how to obtain the data and tools. Participants will also have the opportunity to provide input into HCUP's future directions | ||||
