In 1996, the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (formerly the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research) published the Clinical Practice Guideline for Smoking Cessation (No. 18). This evidence-based Guideline was intended to aid clinicians in intervening effectively with the estimated 50 million Americans who smoke. The Guideline was disseminated widely, and served as the basis for cessation programs, health systems changes and research. Because of important recent advances in tobacco research, a consortium of private and public entities has sponsored an Update to the Guideline. This Update, to be published in May 2000, as a Public Health Service Report, reconvened the original Panel of experts and charged them with updating and expanding the Guideline as appropriate. During this Update, 3000 new articles were identified, as many as were identified during the original Guideline process. This new pool of data allowed the Expert Panel to conduct more rigorous analyses and to examine new topics for the Update. This Symposium Panel moderated by Michael Fiore, chair of the Update panel, will present and discuss: 1) the methodology used in the Update; 2) the efficacy of psychosocial interventions with focused analysis of treatment approaches and intensity; 3) the efficacy of pharmacotherapy treatments; 4) special populations and topics including, adolescents, pregnant smokers, racial and ethnic minorities, weight gain and cost-effectiveness; 5) translating findings into practice: Guideline strategies for Brief Interventions, Intense Interventions, and Interventions for Health Care Systems; and 6) the relevance of the Updated Guideline to the public health community | ||||
